Epic Golf Travel

Many thanks for your inquiry, we would love to be your resource for all your golf travel needs!

Epic Golf Travel was founded over 25 years ago and our company partners are PGA Professionals who have over 75 years of golf industry and travel experience. We are members of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), the leading international golf tourism organization, as well as the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA).

At Epic Golf Travel, our motto, "The Best Golf Vacations on the Planet", is our sincere promise to you to deliver an exceptional golf travel experience... every trip you take and every time you take one.

To this end, we spend more hours planning and executing your trip than any other golf tour company in the industry. Because of the time we spend, this sometimes comes at a cost, so working with us may not be for everyone or for every trip. But for those who seek a genuine interest in their golf experience and fanatical attention to detail, we believe you'll appreciate our absolute commitment to you and your golf travel plans.

The attached schedule is based on 4 golfers traveling and includes 4 nights double accommodations, 2 rounds of golf including 1 round of golf on The Old Course via the Daily Ballot (greens fee not included or guaranteed in this quote and is paid onsite), transfers to and from the airport, golf courses and lodging and a full Scottish breakfast each morning.

Please note that the UK and St Andrews in particular are already extremely busy next year, with much of 2020 being rebooked to 2021 due to the Coronavirus. Once you review your itinerary and approve of it's content, I would suggest we book as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment.

Your suggested lodging has you staying in double guest rooms at The Ardgowan Hotel in St Andrews. The Ardgowan is in the heart of St Andrews and is a two minute walk down to the 18th green of The Old Course. Additionally, you are able to walk anywhere in and around St Andrews in just minutes, so restaurants, pubs, shopping and sightseeing are all within easy walking distance.

Your suggested golf schedule has you playing The Old Course via the Ballot (more information below and details can be found on our website here) and Crail Balcomie Links. I chose Crail because it is one of my favorite courses in the St Andrews area, I think you will enjoy it immensely. If you had different thoughts, I'm happy to make any changes you'd like. If you wanted to play additional golf, that will be easy to arrange for you and fairly economical as well. More information on both your lodging and golf courses may be found below.

There are quite a few things to do after golf for the golfer and non-golfer... walking around St Andrews, playing the 18 hole Himalaya's Putting Course, visiting the British Golf Museum or having a pint at one of the dozens of pubs you're able to walk to from your lodging in St Andrews.

Should this itinerary suit your needs, I suggest you fly into the Edinburgh International Airport, which is the closest international airport to St Andrews, about one hour and 15 minutes by road.

Our prices INCLUDE ALL TAXES AND ANY RESORT OR LODGING FEES, there are no hidden costs of any kind.

Your trip and monies are fully protected from any Coronavirus related closings or delays.

This trip itinerary is a quotation only and therefore remains subject to availability. I look forward to your thoughts and please reach out if you have any questions or need additional information.

When we've reached the point where you're ready to book, you can simply click on the "Ready to Book" button contained herein and it will walk you through the process of making your deposit and other payments.

Kind regards,

Dave Redmond, Senior Partner

Ranked #5 in Top 100 Golf Courses in the World

Simply put, the oldest and most iconic golf course in the world. The Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker are recognizable names across the globe, yet the greatest feature of the Old Course is that despite its grand status, it remains a public golf course, open to all.

Rarely is the Old course ranked outside the top ten in the world, it's a very special links, designed by Mother Nature. It is probable that golf was played here back in the 12th century, what is certain is that the Old Course is one of the oldest golf courses in the world.

It's unlikely that the Old Course will feel familiar when you play it for the first time (except perhaps the 1st, 17th and 18th). Television tend to make the ground look very flat, but the humps, hollows and ripples in the fairways are much deeper when you get out onto the course, as indeed are the pot bunkers.

The St Andrews Links Trust (the organization that oversees and operates all St Andrews courses) has very specific ways that you can play The Old Course...

  • Apply for a tee time each September in their Ballot drawing for the following year.
  • Apply in January for any tee times from the September ballot that were not claimed.
  • Book a guaranteed Old Course golf package through a golf tour company such as ourselves. As you may have discovered, they typically cost from $5,000.00 USD to $6,000.00 USD and usually include 5 nights and 5 rounds. They are not customizable.
  • Apply for the Daily Ballot once you are in St Andrews. These ballots are drawn two days in advance...you would apply for a time on a Monday for Wednesday and so on. About 50% of all tee times on The Old Course are allotted to the Daily Ballot.
  • Rise early one morning and queue up at the Starters Building for an open slot on the Old Course that day. We typically advise clients to arrive by 5am (depending on the time of year), but you may ask for advice from the staff at the Starters Building.

There is no other way to play The Old Course other than the options above. The St Andrews Links Trust does not offer tee times on The Old Course to individuals or groups in the traditional manner.

As you can see, it's fairly complicated overall and also expensive if you go the "Guaranteed Tee Time" route. However, we've been helping our clients play The Old Course for decades and we know the in's and out's of all your options. We will help you and your group with the multiple ballot opportunities available and give you the best advice as to how to get a tee time on The Old Course. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or comments and we'll be happy to go into greater detail.

Ranked #74 in Top 100 Golf Courses in Scotland

One of the world's oldest golf clubs, Crail Golfing Society was founded in February 1786 and initially comprised membership of 11 local golfers. The club's original home was located at Sauchope just outside the picturesque fishing village of Crail and it was not until 1895, with the help of Old Tom Morris did they relocate to their present home at Balcomie Golf Links.

The Balcomie Links at Crail, though not particularly long, is a truly beautiful venue with superb views of the North Sea from every tee. Far removed from the bustle of everyday life, many holes climb and tumble alongside the water's edge and the rocky outcrops of the Forth shore. A truly memorable round and one not to miss.

A wonderful family owned hotel, restaurant and bar located less than a two minute walk from The Old Course 18th green.

A 3 star Scottish Tourist Board accommodation, the Ardgowan Hotel is also within walking distance of the University of St Andrews, the Castle, dozens of restaurants and all shopping in St Andrews.

The hotel was designed by the famous Scottish architect, George Rae, and was built in 1847. It comprises 29 comfortable en suite bedrooms across the two adjoining Georgian town houses. The Pilmour Hotel, located just next door, dates from 1820 and has an additional 7 en suite bedrooms.

The restaurant is set back from North Street by its' own stone terrace, where you can enjoy outdoor food and drink during the warmer months.

A private club founded in 1867, the St Andrews Ladies' Putting Club course is open to the public daily from April to September (and in March and October, weather permitting).

Before 1860 the caddies of St Andrews had laid out a small putting area near where Rusacks Hotel now stands. They would play to pass the time while waiting for a bag. When the course was quiet a few young ladies would play.

There was some tension between the caddies and the ladies, so much so that it was decided a piece of ground be found where the ladies could play away from the caddies. There was an unused piece of ground to the north of the Swilcan Burn. The ground was rough with whins which were used by local washerwomen to dry clothes, and pitted with rabbit holes. A nine hole course was laid out by Old Tom Morris, requiring a cleek and a putter, and so the St Andrews Ladies' Golf Club was formed in 1867.

The Himalayas lie between the famous Old Course and the spectacular West Sands, only a ten minute walk from the center of  St Andrews.

From the 16th century to the present day, the whole history of the great game is explored at The British Golf Museum. Discover the equipment, personalities and prizes of our much loved sport. Brought to life with hands on activities, interactives and modern interpretation, this is a must see attraction.

Visit their new flagship exhibition space, 'The Open Gallery', exploring the rich history of golf's oldest Major. Also in the Museum there are two exciting temporary exhibitions on golfing greats Sir Henry Cotton and Freddie Tait. Please visit throughout the year for their program of weekly events and lecture series.

The museum is a 5 minute walk from the town centre and is situated directly opposite The Royal and Ancient Clubhouse. There is a large car park behind the museum, operated by Fife Council and a coach drop off point.

There are any number of fascinating and historic tours of Scotland, Fife, Edinburgh and the surrounding countryside that depart from St Andrews. Tours lasting from just a few hours to full day tours are available.

Some of the options are listed below:

  • Historic St Andrews & the Fishing Villages of East Neuk
